Halloween Safety

jakeolantern2.jpg (2710 bytes)Halloween will be here before you know it! Of course trick-or-treating is fun, but there are a few things we all need to keep in mind to keep everyone safe.

1. When choosing a costume, make sure they are labeled "flame resistant". Remember that the items can still catch on fire. Be sure children are careful around candles, jack-o-lanterns, and other flames. Make sure you choose costumes that are bright and reflective. The costumes should fit well so children don't trip.

2. Children should wear shoes that fit well and are sturdy so they won't trip and fall.

3. Add reflective tape to costumes that are not reflective.

4. Try using non-toxic make-up instead of a mask. Masks can prevent children from seeing well.

5. Swords, knives and similar accessories should be made of soft, flexible material.

6. Always take a flashlight while going trick-or-treating.

7. Review the "Stop-Drop-Roll" procedure with your children to ensure they know what to do in case their clothes should catch on fire.

8. Teach your children how to dial 9-1-1 in case of an emergency.

9. Make sure your child knows the rules -- appropriate and inappropriate behavior at Halloween.

10. Only approach houses that are lit.

11. Walk, don't run.

12. Stay on the sidewalks and obey traffic signals.

13. If you are out driving during trick-or-treat, drive slower than you normally would.

By keeping these safety tips in mind, Halloween can be safe and fun!
